Houseplant I didn't buy

Photobucket
Aglaonema 'Crete'

It's new and it's interesting but I've decided I don't really want one. Actually I don't even think it even looks very attractive... The red doesn't seem to belong and it's a little jarring to look at (possibly because of the yellow?). Also I think it's $25 for a 6" pot which doesn't help its case much.

I'm glad I decided against it because space is limited and I'm sure by now I'd be thinking of all the other things I could have bought with that money (I think it's going to be a 6" asplenium nidus).

  1. Hmm. I probably would have. If I had the $25, anyway. Was the green really an olivey green like in the picture, or a green green?

  2. I'm pretty sure that's accurate. I'll have a look again at work tomorrow. The only other pictures I can find of this seem to match. Similar cultivars have that similar olive-yellow-green colour as well.

First picture on this page is 'Crete' with basically the same colours but a little more subdued. The next one ('Vesuvio') is nicer in my opinion even though it has all the same colours.

A few of the Aglaonemas on this page seem to be from that same cross or related with the red/pink. Pink cultivars like 'Ruay Ngen' or 'Red Kochin' from that page don't have that same (jarring) contrast to them that 'Crete' has. Again though you can see that light olive-green on most of these but just less of it.

'Lemonade' pictured here has similar yellow colour which I also don't really like. Legacy green is nice though... Actually from that page I'd take 'Decora' or 'Lipstick Black' over any with the red in them by a long shot.
